on pottery
Pottery is one of the oldest art and craft forms, that stuck to us, because it makes sense. At least that’s what I believe. We can reclaim clay as many times, until we decide it’s worth the firing and then, some mud and water, combined and fired, transform into long-lasting stoneware objects. Pieces that may even outlast us. It’s an interesting material with never ending exploring options. It can be simply decorative, it can be useful, it can be meaningful.
on vargas vargas
I started doing ceramics in 2017 in a small studio in Hamburg. For years, I only sat on the wheel from time to time, taking some classes here and there, trying out what I could do with clay. I found out – there’s no ending to it. There’s no ending to learning new techniques, to try new forms, new glazes.
vargasvargas is also an advocate for conscious consumption. I believe in choosing objects that are aesthetically pleasing and can stand the test of time as companions in our lives.
Ultimately, despite being stoneware, ceramics can still be fragile. With the right care, ceramic objects can be very long-lasting. Yet in this ambiguity lies its essence. So if a piece breaks, let it be a gentle reminder of life’s delicate beauty.
on the founder
I’m Katja Paulina Vargas Vargas, the founder of vargasvargas. Each piece I create is handcrafted and unique, reflecting my personal taste and aesthetic principles. A poem to the imperfect. I work both on the pottery wheel and with the hand-building technique in my small Berlin studio.
